Overkill - Manchester, Sound Control (17/3/14)
I've waited over twenty years to see these New Jersey thrashers, so I was looking forward to this. It isn't the greatest of starts however, as the sound mix isn't quite right and neither the guitars or vocals seem loud enough. Wrecking Crew soon raises the excitement levels with its spiky punk energy. The sound quality is variable throughout the set. Hammerhead, for example, sounds spectacular whilst a high octane, thunderous Coma becomes a muddy mess.
Some of the newer material, such as Electric Rattlesnake and the powerful Ironbound, fares particularly well as it is more groove orientated, and it's much easier to pick out their well defined riffs than some of the older thrashier material. The set spans over thirty years but is mainly centred around pre-1992 material. Whilst the set isn't perfect, it does showcase how many great songs Overkill have written over the years. Hello From The Gutter is a true thrashterpiece, and it is played with ferocious energy. The slower Manowarisms of In Union We Stand sound amazing, an anthemic, heroic call to arms. Regular set closer, Elimination, is excellent too.
Encore, the doomy, weighty Horrorscope, absolutely crushes. Fuck You rather predictably closes the show, but in a shambolic and riotous manner. Overall, a good show rather than a great one.
